New Low at Lomond
Clydebank 1st XV travelled along the road to Bonhill to play Loch
Lomond and although the team was comprised of a lot of young, but keen
players, it succumbed to a more experienced and determined Lomond side
who were perhaps the least mediocre on the day. The final result ended
31-17 to Lomond. Meanwhile back at Whitecrook, the clubs significant
other half beat Hamilton 3rd XV 64-19.
The start to the 1st XV game was possibly a premonition of what was
to come. The Clydebank XV took the field quietly, without much fuss,
while the Lomond players shouted and cheered on their team mates in an
attempt to raise their game. The result was a team with more desire at
the breakdown and in general open play.
Clydebank did manage to control much of the territory in the first
half but with the loss of any real structure or game plan in recent
months they could make no headway towards the line, and in the confusion
which has characterised their latest performances they lost out to the
more ferocious attitude of the Lomond players.
With Clydebank failing early on to make a dent in the Lomond defence
it was a brace of converted tries, within a five minute period, which
would set Lomond off on their way to an easy win. Both scores came from
breaks where Clydebank failed to control the ball.
Before half time Clydebank did score an unconverted try after a kick
through by Ross McCombe was collected by Robert Parr who passed back
into the supporting McCombe who crossed the line.
The second half started briskly for Clydebank with a converted
forwards try for Allan Cameron. This narrowed the gap and gave Clydebank
some hope.
Unfortunately, this was soon dashed as Lomond crossed the line for their
third converted try.
Clydebank could not settle into any consistent pattern of play and
Lomond took advantage of this with a further two converted tries and a
penalty to add the bonus point and put the match beyond Clydebank.
A final flourish did see Euan Cuthbert cross the line for a try which
was converted by Ross Moffatt and ended the scoring at 31-19 in favour
of Lomond.
The Mini rugby section, in conjunction with Loch Lomond, took on
Paisley at Lomond's home pitches. There were a number of matches played
and all players enjoyed themselves.
The U15 side crossed Glasgow to Uddingston where they won 22 - 31.
Tries were scored by Callum Smith (3), Haneff Draz and Jake Anderson.
The ever improving Clydebank U15's dominated in a hard fought match
against league rivals Uddingston. The Titans probably should have won
this game by a bigger margin as many try scoring opportunities were
squandered and soft tries conceded.
The young players proved they have improved in all areas of the game
over the winter break and can't wait for their next game at home against
Paisley.
The U17 team were away to Lenzie with reduced numbers. The match was
played 12-a-side which forced the game into a more open running affair.
Unfortunately, this did not fit well with Clydebank's style of play and
they lost 45-7. The only Clydebank score came from a try by Lloyd McCord
and a conversion by Jack McCombe.
