Clydebank Rugby Club hosted their annual Tens Tournament at Whitecrook on Saturday, which this year was backed by BAA Glasgow Airport.

BAA Glasgow Airport provided funding to help the event grow and be a great success.  Twelve local Glasgow teams competed for the Plate, Bowl and the James McCombe Memorial Cup trophies.

The early stages involved four groups of three teams who competed in a round robin format with the winners progressing to the Cup tournament, the runners-up progressing to the Bowl tournament and the third placed teams competing for the Plate.

The early favourites looked to be Allan Glens who showed some great skills in the opening matches. Clydebank fielded two teams with the A team starting off well when they won their group convincingly with two wins. The B team fared less well with two losses that saw them enter the Plate semi finals.

Old guys get together

The A team met Helensburgh Rugby club in the semi final of the cup but failed to reproduce their efforts of the group stages. Clydebank tried to bulldoze their way through the Helensburgh defence who soaked up the pressure and made the breaks that saw them score the winning tries that dumped the Clydebank A team out of the competition.

The B team were also unable to make any further progress as they were beaten by Hyndland in the semi final of the Plate competition.

The Cup final was no real surprise and saw the two National League 3 teams, Allan Glens and Helensburgh, fight it out for the major honours of the day. The match was a close run thing with fine rugby shown by both teams. However, the pace of the Allan Glens team was the deciding factor that saw them win the match and lift the James McCombe Memorial trophy.

Spectators enjoy the day

The Bowl final had the Allan Glens B team matched against Strathclyde Police but once again the Allan Glens team prevailed to make it a bumper day for the Bishopbriggs club with two trophies in the bag.

Hyndland with the ball

The Plate final had Hyndland take on Renfrew with Hyndland running out winners and adding to their success of last year.

Entertainment was provided by the Pamela Henry dance group who have been great supporters of the event in recent years.

Clydebank now return to their preparations for the league with training continuing to take place at Whitecrook on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7pm for both Senior and U17 players. The S1, S2 and U15 age groups will train on the same nights between 6 and 7pm while the Mini section will continue to train on Thursday nights at 6pm only.
